Head of Department. We were extremely pleased to recruit Carl to lead our department. Carl has previously worked at national firm, Pannone & Partners and was also the Head of Department at one of the country’s leading motor defence specialist firms. Carl has vast experience of representing clients on a national basis and is particularly skilled in developing technical defences for the whole array of alleged driving offences. Carl has personally represented Judges, celebrities and fellow professionals.
David Caplin qualified at Cunninghams in 1993 becoming a partner in 1994. He is recognised as one of the leading lawyers in his field by Chambers directory of the UK legal profession.
Chambers Guide, the definitive guide to the legal profession 2008 quotes David as “a thorough and effective advocate - the sort of person you go to when you want a guarantee that the job will be done properly” and places him in the top tier of leading criminal lawyers. Chambers 2007 quoted David as "a copper-bottomed guarantee of reliability”. He holds the Higher Courts (Criminal Proceedings) qualification entitling him to practice in all criminal courts in England and Wales.
Philip Lythgoe qualified in 1988 and became a partner of JMW Solicitors in 1991. He was a founder partner of Maidments Solicitors and joined Cunninghams as a partner in 1998. He has defended clients up and down the country for the whole array of motor defence cases. He holds the Higher Courts (Criminal Proceedings) qualification entitling him to practice in all criminal courts in England and Wales. He sits on the Manchester Law Society Crown and Magistrates Court Committee.
With 15 years qualification experience in criminal defence, 11 as a partner and with 5 of those years a Senior Partner at his previous practice, Adrian brings a wealth of experience gained from him having being instructed by a wide cross section of clients on a broad range of different legal problems with a special interest in Road Traffic and Motor Defence work. He is our specialist Higher Court’s Advocate attending regularly before the Crown Court and with further experience in representation of Appellants before the Court of Appeal he prides himself on his ability to assess, consider and apply the relevant law whilst always maintaining a common sense and a down to earth yet professional approach.
Andrew qualified in 1983 and joined the practice in 2004, after working for many years at Glaisyers Solicitors. He has a wealth of experience in advising and representing motoring clients. He is well respected in the Magistrates Courts, where he conducts many of the firm’s trials.
Paul qualified in 2007 and joined the practice in 2007, after working for many years at Tranters Solicitors. Paul has successfully represented many clients in the Magistrates with his extensive road traffic knowledge. Paul is a studious, thorough and extremely reliable advocate. He is well versed in all the technical defences that our firm adopts to succeed in acquittal.
Geoff qualified in 2006 and joined the practice in 2007, after working for many years in several high profile Manchester Solicitors. Geoff had for many years prior to his legal profession worked for the Police, where he gained a thorough knowledge of road traffic law, to which he uses to our best advantage in identifying the deficiencies in the prosecution evidence.
Tom has 10 years experience working for a number of large criminal defence practices throughout the country. As such Tom has gained a wealth of varied experience in court procedure which is essential to our team in identifying flaws in the prosecution case. His knowledge of road traffic law is second to none.
Jeff Shute is one of the most senior legal clerks in the country and has defended multiple death by dangerous driving cases successfully. His knowledge of black letter traffic law practice and procedure is exceptional. He is very experienced in highly complex and difficult cases.
Rebecca has 13 years experience in law and has specialised in serious criminal cases for ten of those. She has extensive experience in dealing with motoring offences in particular those of a serious nature and has significant knowledge of Road Traffic Law.
Jennifer is the Assistant to Carl Millar and deals with all initial enquiries. Jennifer assists Carl in the preparation of cases for court, liaising with experts and the court.

Ranjit Kaur Sandhu joined Cunninghams in May 2006 and will qualify in 2009. Ranjit has a thorough understanding of road traffic law and procedure. She is fluent in Punjabi. She maintains an integral role within the practice and is considered a valuable asset by her peers.
Karim joined the firm in 2006 and is currently undertaking his training whilst managing the administration of the Magistrates Department. During his time spent at the firm he has become a qualified police station representative and has cultivated a strong understanding of road traffic law and procedure. He maintains an integral role within the practice and is considered a valuable asset by his peers. Karim is fluent in Spanish, French and has a understanding of Arabic.
