Traffic Light Offences

Prosecutions for traffic light offences can arise when a police officer has seen an alleged traffic light offence or, more commonly, through the use of a camera detection device mounted near a traffic light. As with speed cameras it must be shown that the device and the camera attached to the device are correctly calibrated and the Prosecution must ensure that the chain of evidence is robust to successfully prove a traffic light offence case against you.

If there are any errors in the Prosecution case then here at Cunninghams we will find them.

Punishment of Traffic Light Offences

A fine, three penalty points on your driving licences and discretionary driving disqualification

Traffic Sign Offences

A breach of a road traffic sign is governed by s. 36 of The Road Traffic Act 1988.
The following is a list of some of the signs that are covered by this section (not exhaustive).

  • No u-turn
  • Arrow indicating direction of traffic to be followed
  • Stop at a major road
  • Double white lines
  • No entry

Punishment of Sign Offences

A fine of up to £1000.

You should also be aware that you can be disqualified from driving or receive penalty points if you fail to comply with the following signs:

  • Stop
  • No entry signs
  • Traffic lights
  • Double white lines

It is essential to the Prosecution case that they establish that the road signs were lawful. Here at Cunninghams we can work with signage and traffic light experts to scrutinize the lawfulness of any sign or set of lights that you are alleged to have contravened.
