In February 2007 the government introduced mobile phone driving legislation, which means that it is now a separate driving offence for using a handheld mobile phone whilst driving, or similar device. Similar devices can include SatNav navigation equipment, computer equipment and Blackberries.
An exception to the offence is whereby a motorist is using a mobile phone to make a ‘999’ emergency call and it is unsafe or impractical to stop driving.
A fine of up to £1000 and up to £2500 if driving a vehicle adapted to carry eight or more passengers and three penalty points on your driving licence.
