According to Section 4 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, which falls under criminal law in the United Kingdom, it is a criminal offence for a person to drive or attempt to drive a vehicle on a public road or any other public space whilst they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It is still considered to be an offence if the drugs that have been taken are legal drugs or prescription drugs. The Road Traffic Act of 1988 defines a drug as any intoxicating substance other than alcohol.
