All drivers know that driving under the influence of alcohol is a criminal offence, but British drivers heading off to France should take note.
Not only is the drink drive limit less than that in Britain, in France the limit is 50ųg in 100ml of blood, as opposed to the limit being 80ųg in the UK. As from the 1st November this year, drivers stopped by the police in France may find themselves in breach of the law even if they are below the legal limit. It is now compulsory for every driver in France to carry a breathalyser kit in their car. Failure to do so will result in a fine. There are no plans to introduce such a law in the UK but the debate still rages on as to whether the drink drive limit should be lowered.
