Whilst the dangers of driving without insurance may not be as explicit as other kinds of motoring offences, such as drink driving, the penalties can be severe. Therefore, just like with speeding and drink driving, driving without insurance is really something that you shouldn’t risk.
In fact, frequently, if you are caught driving without insurance this could lead to an immediate disqualification from driving, and usually it will be in the region of 28 days. In fact, your disqualification can be much longer, especially if you are a repeat offender.
Alongside a disqualification from driving, the penalty for driving without insurance could also include a Fixed Penalty Notice, of six points on your licence and a £200 fine.
With insurance, often their may be circumstances where you are driving without insurance without realizing it. For example, perhaps you have assumed that your friend’s car has comprehensive insurance, or perhaps your insurance has expired without realizing it.
In both these circumstances this is not an excuse, and whatever your reason for driving without insurance, you will be liable for prosecution.
Often, of course, your prosecution may be incorrect, and if you can be prove that you did have insurance at the time of the proposed offence, your prosecution can be quashed. If you are in this situation, it is important that you send a copy of your insurance certificate to your magistrate office, prior to your hearing.
