Mobile Phone Offences – Are You Aware? 04/12/2010

The law is changing all of the time, and must adapt to new human behaviours, as well as public opinion. For instance, as we begin to use new technologies, the law must ensure that these are used correctly and do not interfere with the general welfare of the public.

The best example of this is the use of mobile phones whilst driving, and where once their was a loophole that meant that this dangerous activity could be performed without risk of prosecution in 2007 this loophole was closed, and in February 2007 legislation was introduced that make using a mobile phone a criminal offence whilst driving.

To date, most of us are aware that using a mobile whilst driving is a motoring offence; however what you mightn’t be aware of is the legislation to makes using a mobile phone an offence also covers similar devices – such as blackberries or navigation equipment.

You might think that a mobile phone offence, when compared to other motoring offences, is fairly innocuous, however the crime is considered serious, and this is because the ramifications can be severe, and, according to direct.gov.uk, research has shown that using a mobile phone impairs your ability to react to dangerous situations, and can therefore present a similar risk to even drink driving.
